Human Consumption Permit Update

Thank you all for your incredible patience as we continue walking through the process of obtaining our Human Consumption Permit. Signing the law was a major milestone — but as we’ve learned, it was really just the beginning.

After the law passed, we entered the next phase: drafting regulations, going through the public comment period, and waiting for the official application forms to be developed. We were finally able to submit our first draft of the permit application to the DDA at the end of October 2025.

By December 2025, we received written feedback from DDA stating, “The operation and application are definitely on the right track. The comments below are mostly finer-level detail type questions.”

That feedback was encouraging! We’ve been working through those details and are now preparing to submit Round 2 of our application. Once the written portion is approved, the next step will be submitting lab samples for required testing on our water and milk.

While the process has taken longer than we hoped, progress is happening — just at a steady, methodical pace.

The Insurance Challenge

Interestingly, the biggest obstacle we’ve faced isn’t the permit itself — it’s securing insurance for human consumption. I’ve been on a nearly year-long search, reaching out to insurance companies and talking with raw milk producers across the country. Unfortunately, most either operate without coverage for their raw milk or believe they’re covered without realizing their policy exclusions.

Every quote we’ve received so far includes exclusions for things like pathogens, bacteria, and communicable diseases — exactly the risks we need coverage for. We simply can’t justify spending thousands of dollars on a policy that wouldn’t protect us when it matters most.

I’m not giving up. But the reality is, we may reach a point where we have the permit to sell raw milk for human consumption — yet no viable insurance coverage for it.
